2023 Porsche Cayenne Coupe
Starting at $82.150
Highs A sports car in SUV clothing, a bevy of impressive powertrains, insanely quick.
Lows Coupe style sacrifices max cargo space, biggest wheels make for a bumpy ride, you've got to pay (a lot) to play.
Verdict The Cayenne Coupe's ballistic performance makes a compelling argument for sport-inspired SUVs, and does so without diminishing the utility of the normal Cayenne SUV by much.
Overview
Meant as a more stylish alternative to the boxier Cayenne SUV, the Cayenne Coupe is a first-class solution to an enthusiast's conflicting need for a useful family tram that's also a riot to pilot. As easy on the eyes as it is to drive through canyon twisties, the Cayenne Coupe's verve is thick with Porsche's storied sports-car DNA. The most modest Cayenne Coupe comes with a 340-hp turbocharged V-6, but the GTS model comes with a twin-turbo V-8 with 453 horsepower on tap. Among a myriad of strong mid-size SUVs competitors such as the Genesis GV80, BMW X5, and Volvo XC90, the Cayenne Coupe's handsome build quality, upscale options, and tremendous performance pin it among the best. Just remember, this is a Porsche, so you pay heavily for the privilege of owning it. Those seeking the maximum level of propulsion would be interested in the Cayenne Coupe Turbo models, which we review separately.
What's New for 2023?
The Porsche Cayenne Coupe enters 2023 without any significant changes.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Cayenne Coupe: $82,150
E-Hybrid: $93,250
S: $96,650
GTS: $117,250
To follow the intentions of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe's emphasis on sport over maximum utility, we'd up the ante and choose the Cayenne Coupe S. This specifies the 434-hp twin-turbo V-6 powertrain and standard all-wheel drive. And why not add a few niceties while we're at it? 14-way power-adjustable Adaptive Sport front seats, ambient interior lighting, heated front-seat cushions, a heated steering wheel, and four-zone climate control.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Porsche offers the Cayenne Coupe with a range of diverse powertrains. The conventional gasoline engines include a 340-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, a 434-hp twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6, and a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that makes 453 ponies on the GTS model. The other powerplant is a transplant from the square-back Cayenne E-Hybrid and develops 455 horses. The GTS rides on standard 21-inch rims and a lower suspension than the three models below it in the lineup. Like the square-back Cayenne, the Coupe's handling is precise and agile, and the ride it delivers is composed. When we first sampled the Cayenne Coupe, we compared its handling with that of a sports sedan. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate its eager and athletic nature.
Towing and Payload Capacity
From base Cayenne Coupe to the Cayenne Coupe GTS, the maximum towing capacities are a formidable 7716 pounds.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The Cayenne Coupe with the base turbocharged V-6 gets an EPA-rated 19 mpg city and 23 highway. Upgrading to the twin-turbo V-6 drops both ratings to 16 mpg and 21 mpg respectively. The Cayenne S Coupe we evaluated on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, earned 25 mpg. For more information about the Cayenne Coupe's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Despite the sloping roofline, the Cayenne Coupe's rear-seat headroom is almost the same as the square-back Cayenne's. The only downside to ordering the Coupe is that the cargo area is slightly smaller, but still a very usable 22 cubic feet. All Coupe models come standard with a panoramic fixed-glass sunroof as well as eight-way power-adjustable front seats and rear bucket seats. The seats can even be outfitted in a classic Porsche houndstooth-pattern cloth. A power rear liftgate and dual-zone automatic climate control are nice features, but the best of what the Cayenne Coupe has to offer is found among its many optional features and packages, which can elevate the price quickly. Porsche also offers the opportunity to create—for a hefty sum, of course—a bespoke Cayenne Coupe through its Exclusive Manufaktur program.
