On July 7th 2004, a fighter named Buakaw Por Pramuk from a small village in Surin, Thailand shot to superstardom on the world stage in Tokyo, Japan. He fought three opponents in one night and outclassed every one of them, using his muay Thai style to great effect against an Australian nak muay and two Japanese kickboxers in a K-1 rules set. His opponents on the night were John Wayne Parr, Takayuki Kohiruimaki and Masato Kobayashi. Masato was Japan’s most famous kickboxer at the time, and was a strong favourite to win the tournament. Prior to the win, Buakaw was not well-known around the world – especially outside of the muay Thai community. Although he had won the Omnoi stadium title and the Toyota cup in Thailand, he had never won a coveted Lumpinee or Rajadamnern title. After his domination of his opponents on the night, Buakaw became a huge star across the globe and is still the most well-known muay Thai fighter of all time.
