Borobudur Temple was originally built as a place of worship for Mahayana Buddha and dedicated to Gautama Buddha. This temple is one of the largest and most famous examples of Buddhist architecture in the world. At that time, Borobudur Temple became the center of religious and educational activities.
Over the following centuries, Borobudur Temple experienced difficult times. In the 10th century, the kingdoms around the temple began to convert to religion and abandoned Buddhist beliefs. As a result, Borobudur Temple was abandoned and neglected for several centuries.
In the 19th century, a Dutch architect named Cornelius had rediscovered the Borobudur Temple which was buried in mud and dust. Over the years, he and his team cleaned up the temple and restored it to its former glory. In 1982, Borobudur Temple was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Until now, Borobudur Temple is still a place of worship of Buddha and a popular tourist spot in Indonesia. This temple is proof of the existence of the triumph of civilization in Indonesia and is a silent witness to the development of the Mahayana Buddhist belief in Indonesia.
