Putin Visits Draftees, Ukraine Fears North Offensive
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited a training centre in the Ryazan region for mobilised troops, for the first time since announcing the partial military call-up for the Ukraine war on September 21. Putin fired several shots from a Russian SVD sniper rifle, wearing ear protectors and safety glasses, as he took aim under a camouflage net. Ukraine said Belarus and Russia's hostile statements and the deployment of a joint force indicate a "growing" threat of a fresh offensive on the northern front. The UK said one of the two Russian Su-27 fighter jets involved in a "potentially dangerous" standoff with an RAF RC-135 Rivet Joint reconnaissance plane during patrolling over the Black Sea fired a missile "in the vicinity" but "beyond visual range." Meanwhile, Kyiv claims Moscow has deployed more than 8,000 Wagner Group mercenaries for fighting in Ukraine.
