Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian independence activist and a key figure in the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. He is known for his philosophy of nonviolent resistance and his promotion of civil disobedience as a means of achieving political and social change. Gandhi was born in Porbandar, a coastal town in present-day Gujarat, India, and studied law in London. He returned to India in 1915 and became a leader of the Indian National Congress.
