I'm making a charcoal sketch under an acrylic painting. I had issues with the charcoal blending into the acrylic paint with the first two paintings, but I'm telling you how I figured it out with the third painting using fixative and matte medium so that the charcoal drawing does not smudge and I can paint over it. I saw this idea of painting acrylic over a charcoal drawing in a book with tips for acrylic painters. Make the drawing in charcoal, blow the excess charcoal dust away and then to paint a thin layer of acrylic over it so that the drawing will show through. And then you can paint some parts thicker and add more charcoal on top to make the painting more lively. I used charcoal pencils and charcoal sticks. The difference is that the charcoal pencils have a wood case like pencils do, so they won't smudge your hand or fingers as much. And you can sharpen them, although the tips broke easily when I sharpened them. I made three little trial paintings on cardboard. I had primed the cardboard with gesso and I cut it down to postcard size pieces. I made two flower paintings as mother's day cards for my mother and grandmother and then one beetle painting as a birthday card for my nephew. I used my previous sketches as references for the freehand flower drawings. And I got the reference for the beetle shape from an insect book and then drew these zigzag shapes and circles on it to give it a tribal like pattern.
