The song was written by Gaga, Fernando Garibay, and DJ White Shadow, while it was produced by herself and DJ White Shadow, with additional co-production from Garibay and Clinton Sparks. The song has elements of electropop with elements of synth-pop and trance, featuring Gregorian music. In the lyrics, Gaga plays Mary Magdalene, whom she sees as a feminine force that she worshiped since her childhood in church and all-girls schools. The song is one of several songs on the album with gospel references in it.
