Noem pledges hundreds more federal agents to Minneapolis after ICE shooting
Time reports Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem vowed on Sunday to send "hundreds more" federal agents to Minneapolis as thousands continue to protest the fatal shooting of a woman by an immigration officer last week. Noem said on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures that the reinforcements would arrive "today and tomorrow" and would allow ICE and Border Patrol personnel working in Minneapolis to operate "safely." She cited a recent welfare fraud scandal in Minnesota as a reason for sending agents, saying they will "uncover the true corruption and theft that has happened." The White House and Noem have defended the agent involved, Jonathan Ross, as acting in self-defense, a claim disputed by Minneapolis officials and other Democrats.
The announcement follows large demonstrations after the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three and a poet, who was shot inside her car in front of her partner on Wednesday. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has called for ICE to "Get the f— out" and said he has "deep mistrust" of federal agencies investigating the case, requesting that the FBI allow state agencies to aid the probe.
Frey pointed to viral cell phone videos he says show Good attempting to leave the scene rather than "run over" an officer; in one video, Good’s car can be seen reversing, her tires facing away from the officer who fired into the side of her car.
