CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 23-year-old man was killed and two teenagers were injured in a shooting that erupted during a fight on Cleveland’s West Side Sunday afternoon, according to police.
The victim has been identified as Julius Kafel, 23, who died after being transported to a local hospital following the shooting.
According to the Cleveland Police Department, officers from the Second District responded to reports of shots fired in the 3500 block of West 48th Street at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Investigators said gunfire broke out during an altercation involving a group of individuals gathered in the area. When officers arrived, they discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Authorities said Julius Kafel, a 16-year-old male, and a 15-year-old male were all struck by gunfire during the incident. Emergency Medical Services transported all three victims to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment.
Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, Kafel later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officials reported that the 16-year-old victim remains in critical condition, while the 15-year-old victim is listed in serious condition.
The Cleveland Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and has taken over the investigation. Detectives spent several hours collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and working to determine the events that led to the deadly shooting.
Police confirmed that an adult male believed to be connected to the incident has been detained. However, authorities have not yet announced formal charges or released additional details regarding the suspect's identity.
The shooting remains under active investigation as detectives continue to gather evidence and review witness statements.
