Waymo Drives 500,000 Trips a Week. How Safe Is It

More than 500,000 paid Waymo trips happen every week without a human driver. But how safe are those rides, really? On July 23, IIHS compared Waymo's driverless crash rates across four cities: 68% fewer police-reportable crash involvements per mile than human drivers. Austin was the exception, at 4% higher, with a small sample. And there's a catch: Waymo was the only operator with available mileage data, so for the others, comparable crash rates still can't be calculated.
