Prof. Sir Ziauddin Ahmad: Life, Education, Mathematics Career and Legacy at Aligarh Muslim University

Prof. Sir Ziauddin Ahmad was one of the most distinguished mathematicians, educationists, and institution-builders associated with the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). His contribution to mathematics, higher education and the development of the Aligarh educational movement occupies an important place in the history of the institution. Long before Aligarh Muslim University became a full-fledged residential university, Ziauddin Ahmad was associated with the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental (M.A.O.) College at Aligarh. He subsequently became a professor of mathematics, principal, pro-vice-chancellor, vice-chancellor and rector of Aligarh Muslim University. The official history of the AMU Department of Mathematics identifies him as one of the earliest mathematicians associated with the department and records his important role in establishing its early teaching and research tradition.
